Best Custom Home, 5000-6000 Sq. Ft.
The site offered opportunities and challenges. Right in the middle of a hundred-fifty degree arch view of a tidal inlet to Long Island Sound stands a neighbor' house! Although we could develop a long house to access the view, it had to be the entry facade as well.

The detail emerged as the architecture addresses the contradictions. A huge, tow-sided walk-through fireplace and screened porch was placed right in the sightline of the neighbor's house. The exposed view orientated a glassy front, mitigated by layers of porches, terrace walls and columns. Garages and vehicles are serviced by a motor courtyard behind the structure, behind the view. This allowed the broad water-facing elevation, with its twin gables, tower and eyebrow window to freely express the essence of the shingle style.

The interior experience responds to the owner's interests in modern photography and art. The detailing was simplified to such an extent that the family, kitchen and breakfast areas are covered by white-washed exposed wooden joists. There is no formal dining room or living room in this large house. In their place is a bright white meandering core of space of sliding glass studio panels and the view.
